Retro Rewind / Hidden Gems There are some movies that seem to have been erased from the collective cultural hard drive, existing only as a fuzzy memory for those who grew up in the VHS era. Disney’s 1985 live-action film, The Journey of Natty Gann , is one such treasure. If you only know Disney for princesses and sidekicks, you aren't ready for Natty Gann. Set during the Great Depression, the film follows Natty (a pre-fame Meredith Salenger), a tomboyish teenager left behind in Chicago while her father (Ray Wise) heads west to Washington state to find work in the timber industry. When a letter from her dad arrives with vague instructions, Natty decides she isn't waiting for a social worker to put her in a home. She hops a freight train, beginning a 2,000-mile journey through the Pacific Northwest.
