The story follows Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam), a former Jaeger pilot who teams up with Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), a rookie pilot, to operate the Jaeger Gipsy Danger. As the Kaiju attacks intensify, Raleigh and Mako join forces with other Jaeger pilots, including the seasoned Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), to save humanity from extinction.
