Holmes | Serie De Sherlock

The Sherlock Holmes series is a collection of detective stories written by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. First appearing in 1887, the series is a cornerstone of crime fiction and introduced one of the most enduring characters in literary history: the master detective Sherlock Holmes.

In 1893, Conan Doyle decided to kill off Holmes in the story "The Final Problem" (from The Memoirs ), where Holmes and Moriarty plunge to their deaths over the Reichenbach Falls. Doyle wanted to focus on more "serious" historical novels. However, public outcry was immense; readers wore black mourning bands and even protested outside the magazine's offices. Eight years later, pressured by fans and a lucrative offer from The Strand , Doyle resurrected Holmes in The Hound of the Baskervilles (set before the fall) and fully explained his survival in "The Adventure of the Empty House" (1903).

The Sherlock Holmes series is far more than just a set of mysteries. It is a timeless exploration of logic, friendship, and the battle between good and evil. By combining sharp intellect with the emerging science of the Victorian era, Conan Doyle created a character so real that many readers of the time believed he truly lived at 221B Baker Street—a fictional address that today receives letters asking for the detective’s help.

The series is not a continuous novel but a sequence of short stories and four full-length novels. The first story, A Study in Scarlet (1887), introduces the duo. However, the series gained massive popularity through short stories published in The Strand Magazine from 1891 onwards.
