What makes Three Billboards genius is its refusal to let you hate anyone completely.

The movie’s secret weapon is that it never offers a clean solution. The final scene (no spoilers here, but watch it closely) sees Mildred and Dixon driving toward a questionable act of vigilante justice. They admit they aren’t sure they want to do it. “I guess we can decide along the way,” Mildred says. It’s the most honest ending possible.
