If you have spent any time working with AutoCAD or other CAD software (like BricsCAD, ZwCAD, or DraftSight), you have likely encountered a peculiar ghost in the machine: Hzdx.shx .

You open a drawing sent by a client or a vendor, and instead of crisp, legible text, you see a series of question marks, random squiggles, or the dreaded “Unicode replacement” character (�). The command line screams: "Substituting [simplex.shx] for [Hzdx.shx]."
